The videotaped beating of two white men by a group of six or seven black men in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom quickly became a mild internet sensation, and one of the victims believes that was the idea all along.

It happened at about 1 a.m. on January 21, as two friends turned the corner at S. 18th and E. Cary streets in the city’s popular club district after leaving a favorite bar.

“All I can remember is some guys starting to, like, yell at us and shout at us, and the next thing I know, I was waking up the next morning in the hospital,” said one of the victims, a software developer in his mid-20s.

When the video was initially posted on YouTube, it was titled, in essence, this is what happens when white guys use the N-word. But the victim said he and his companion would never use that word, and never even saw their attackers until they came around the corner and started yelling at them.

“When I watch it, I notice first of all that the camera is on long before they even got up to us, before the even see us, they’ve got the video running as they’re giggling and talking to each other,” the victim said. “When they do catch up to, you know, they jump us, they stomp us, they throw us on the ground. And when they throw us on the ground, the light isn’t good enough to video. So you see them pulling out camera phones so they can, you know, illuminate us better for the film.”

“I had to come to any conclusions, I’d say the entire purpose of mugging us was so they could get that video,” the victim added, his eyes still like two cups of blood, surrounded by purpled flesh.

They were also robbed. He has no idea what the attackers were saying. All he recalls is the initial shouting and then doubling back to help his friend, who was behind him and was the first to be attacked. Then, he was knocked out almost instantly.

But he has carefully watched the video for clues.

“They wanted it to look really good,” he added. “And if you’ll listen, they were making grunting noises and whatever else they could do to, you know, sound all tough. But neither me nor the other guy they jumped are particularly big. So it wasn’t very impressive seeing two regular size guys jumped by like six or seven other guys.”

For days, his damaged forehead clearly showed the tread of one of the boots that stomped him, he said. He suffered a concussion and still has numbness in his upper lip. His companion had a wound that had to be stapled shut.

When he asked for help finding his attackers on the internet, he was flooded with responses. The video was color corrected and stabilized so it can be seen much more clearly.

“They’re giving me websites, where this is apparently pretty common, jumping someone and filming it, submitting it to a website,” the victim said. They tracked the “Doughman Media” icon that appeared in the video and did some other computer sleuthing, turning their findings over to police.

He said the beating troubles and angers him, but he’s not going to keep him from his favorite places.

“It’s going to keep me from coming down here by myself or in a group of two,” he said, “but I’ll still come down here.”

1986: The space shuttle Challenger lifts off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. shortly before it exploded with a crew of seven aboard. File photo

The U.S. space agency paused to remember the deadly explosion of the space shuttle Challenger 25 years ago on Friday.

The shuttle broke up just after launch on January 28, 1986, killing all seven astronauts on board. The disaster was watched on live television by many Americans, including schoolchildren turned in to see the first teacher-astronaut travel into space.

A memorial service was planned at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden marked an annual Day of Remembrance for astronauts killed in service on Thursday by placing wreath at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington.

The day is also used to honour three astronauts killed in a fire aboard Apollo I on January 27, 1967 and the seven crew members killed when the shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere on February 1, 2003.

“Throughout history, however, we have seen that achieving great things sometimes comes at great cost and we mourn the brave astronauts who made the ultimate sacrifice in support of NASA missions throughout the agency’s storied history,” President Barack Obama said in a statement.

“Through triumph and tragedy, each of us has benefited from their courage and devotion, and we honour their memory by dedicating ourselves to a better tomorrow. Despite the challenges before us today, let us commit ourselves and continue their valiant journey toward a more vibrant and secure future.”

The commitment of defensive lineman Ray Drew has continued Georgia’s recruiting momentum with less than a week before signing day.

Drew, who is from Thomas County Central High School in Thomasville, Ga., announced his plan to play for the Bulldogs at a press conference Friday. He had Auburn, Clemson, LSU and Miami (Fla.) as his other finalists.

Georgia coach Mark Richt and academics were cited as key factors in his decision.

“It really boiled down to people and academics,” Drew was quoted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Communication is what I plan on majoring in and Georgia has one of the premier communication schools in the nation. And just knowing the type of person that Coach Richt is and the plans that he has for me as far as football and continuing to grow in all aspects of my life played a big role in it.”

Drew, a member of the All-USA first team, is ranked as the top defensive end and No. 9 overall prospect by Rivals.com. His decision follows previous commitments by tight end Jay Rome and Malcolm Mitchell as the Bulldogs close in on a top five class.

Still left to decide is running back Isaiah Crowell of Carver High School in Columbus, Ga. The nation’s No. 4 running back according to Rivals.com, Crowell says he will pick between Georgia and Alabama.

Also on the board for the Bulldogs are defensive lineman Jeoffrey Pagan and John Jenkins.

Bollywood’s leading playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan may have had many chartbuster songs to her credit but this is one special song that the singer will cherish forever. After all, it’s a song for which Sunidhi collaborates with none other than Latino pop sensation Enrique Iglesias.

The song is a romantic ballad showcasing the various moods of love and relationships. It also features a few Hindi lyrics which will be crooned but naturally by Sunidhi. Owing to Enrique’s busy schedule, the song will be recorded in US. Sunidhi and Enrique will also be shooting for a special music video and like Enrique’s earlier music videos this one is also sure to raise the mercury levels.

The music video will be played globally from mid-December.

Enrique Iglesias is hugely popular in India and many of our Bollywood heroines would fight to share the screen with him. Singer Sunidhi Chauhan is the lucky one though. She has not only sung a Hinglish number with the international pop artiste, but has also featured with him in a sizzling music

video.

The track, I can feel you…, for which the duo collaborated with lyricist-composer Shamir Tandon and Iglesias’s co-writer Mark Taylor, will be released in towards the end of February.

A friend of Tandon’s revealed that the project was discussed back in the summer of 2004, when Iglesias had toured India. “It took about six years of back and forth communication for the music piece to materialise. After the lyrics were finalised, Shamir and Sunidhi flew off to the US to record the song. A part of it was also recorded in Mumbai,” informs our source.

Explaining why the song was shot at two different venues, Tandon’s friend says, “Sometimes the artistes find it more convenient to record in their regular studios.” The two singers shared great chemistry while recording the song and later, when shooting the video in the US and UK. “The video is steamy hot,” is all that our source is willing to reveal at the moment about the visuals. He adds that Chauhan was always the first choice as the singer and actor due to her versatility in Hindi and English. “Besides, she also has that oomph factor.”

Interestingly, Iglesias has also sung the Hindi lines in the song I can feel you…. Earlier, Tandon had got Australian cricketer Brett Lee to sing in Hindi in Asha Bhosle’s album called Asha And Friends. It didn’t take long for Iglesius to get his Hindi pronunciation and diction right. “In fact, Enrique recorded most of the lines in one take,” says our source.

When contacted, Tandon, who has also collaborated with the boy band Blue on One love…, featuring Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu in Rakht (2004), declined to comment on his collaboration with Iglesias. He said, “It’s too early to say anything about it right now. At the opportune time, Enrique, Sunidhi and I will talk about the track at length.”

The Apple iPad is now officially available in India. Run around the corner to the nearest Apple store and you can pick up a model with a warantee, at Indian prices, paying in Indian rupees.

Pricing starts as low as Rs 27,900, going up to Rs 44,900. These are in line with the prices at which the same models are available in Europe, which means that Apple has forgone its usual strategy of setting a high premium. But then, it’s done that with the latest range of the MacBook, the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro and the iMac too.

Importantly, unlike in many European countries, both the wi-fi as well as the wi-fi-plus-3G versions on sale. Moreover, the iPad comes unlocked, unlike the iPhone, which means it will accept SIM cards from any service-provider.

The Apple iPad hits India officially

With its official launch, the iPad should now be available to a wider audience. The now-famous App Store, which recently topped 10 billion downloads, has already boosted iPad usage in a number of innovative ways. Games, utilities, communication tools, newspapers, magazines, websites and TV channels, in particular, are extremely popular on the iPad.

Unfortunately, Apple’s e-book store, iBooks, remains out of bounds for users from India, robbing the iPad of one of its most exciting uses. However, readers can download and use the Kindle app for the iPad, which will enable them to buy e-books from India too.

The iPad will compete in India with the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Olivepad, among others. With its reputation preceding it, it has already evoked price-cuts from rivals – the Samsung Galaxy Tab, for instance, is now available at Rs 29,500, down from the launch price of Rs 36,499.

Retailers expect a small initial rush to buy the iPad, followed by steady sales.

Apple iPad prices

Wi-Fi – 16GB: Rs 27,900. 32GB: Rs 32,900. 64GB: Rs 37,900

Wi-Fi + 3G – 16GB: Rs 34,900. 32GB: Rs 39,900. 64GB: Rs 44,900

Will Kolkata embarrassment serve as wake-up call?

Barely a couple of months ago, India witnessed a race against time to get stadiums completed for the Commonwealth Games, which was being hosted in India for the very first time. And now, it is action replay just before the cricket World Cup. Eden Gardens has been punished by ICC for not getting itself in shape in time. Another instance where authorities have shamed themselves and the nation. The big question is when will such things end in India? Or will they ever?

Will Kolkata embarrassment serve as wake-up call?

Back in October 2010, as the whole nation keenly awaited India’s first ever Commonwealth Games, the authorities had messed up big time and not a single venue was ready on schedule. With just a few days to go for the Games, threats of call-off loomed large before last minute panic somehow did a bit of resurrection. Fingers were pointed in all directions and almost every angle was arrived at for the delay. Corruption, contractor issues, nature’s fury, etc etc.

But, what was the use? The damage was done. There was serious collateral damage meted out to India’s credibility. The nation’s ability to manage events came under question. A couple of months after the CWG debacle, the International Olympic Committee warned India of an Olympic ban if professional measures were not adopted sooner than later. The trust factor was vanquished in a matter of few days.

And if you thought only non-cricketing events are victims of unprofessional set-ups in India, think again. My mind goes back to two cricketing instances over the last year or so. First, to the Kotla ODI between India and Sri Lanka, which was abandoned midway due to a dangerous pitch. And a few months after that, the two ODIs against Australia in Kochi and Goa were abandoned without a ball being bowled after overnight showers. These matches were actually called off on bright and sunny mornings where even Sun God’s miracle could not save the day.

These are just a couple of recent instances that just show the systemic failure in Indian cricket. The problem lies with the way we look at such failures. Our tendency to look at them on a standalone basis and not as a collective failure is the root cause of the problem. For example, the Kotla episode was portrayed as a problem of DDCA but not a general Indian cricketing problem, which it actually is. Similarly, why should Kochi and Goa instances be looked at as small venue problems? This is where we tend to go wrong.

Will Kolkata embarrassment serve as wake-up call?

Kolkata had missed multiple deadlines

Just look at the way cricket infrastructure set-up is there in a country like Australia. Every venue in Australia has uniform facilities and all venues look so similar. Be it a thunderstorm in Melbourne or Brisbane or for that matter in Hobart, the venue takes almost the same time to get back in shape for the match to resume and that happens really quickly. This is made possible because Cricket Australia looks at cricket as a unit in itself.

The other recent example of cricketing excellence if I may use that word, is something that happened thousands of miles away at the Centurion, which was witness to nothing less than a ‘human miracle’. Overnight floods in Johannesburg and Pretoria did little to kill cricket. Against all the odds, the authorities in South Africa had ensured play got underway and substantial time was spent out in the middle by both the teams during the first test of the 3-match series between India and South Africa. At that point of time, even Indian cricketers were surprised how it was made possible. And mind you, South African cricket board is actually a poor cousin of BCCI.

Flashback over. Coming to the present scenario. The ICC inspection team has been categorical in its decision to pull the India-England fixture out of Kolkata. What is most shocking is the fact that Kolkata missed multiple deadlines in the process. The ICC was visibly upset at the way Cricket Association of Bengal handled the situation. ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat over the last few months has been finding fans for the way he has been handling crisis-hit game of cricket. And his assessment of the Eden episode sums up the premise that led to the decision
“All venues had ample time in which to prepare for world cup matches. We had been understanding and had provided extensions to the deadline dates but unfortunately we are now at a point where we must carefully manage our risks. The COC had provided venues with a deadline of 30 November 2010 to complete all construction work and then to be match-ready by 31 December 2010. An extension was granted by the ICC for five venues, which were again inspected over the past week. Sadly, Eden Gardens in Kolkata was unable to meet the final deadline date of 25 January 2011,” Lorgat said.

Now, is the state of affairs of the other venues that are set to host the World Cup any better? Very difficult to tell but it will be absurd to think all the other World Cup venues who have cleared the ICC inspection process are monumental masterpieces. Indian cricketing venues still lack some of the basic facilities. Most venues still have the concept of ‘squatting’ stands, which is simply ridiculous. How on earth can you make a proper assessment of ticketing requirements for such stands. Doesn’t it lead to a risk of stampede? Add to this the fact that most Indian cricket venues are always in the process of some renovation or the other. There are serious risks involved at every such incomplete venue.

Will Kolkata embarrassment serve as wake-up call?

Why is this happening?

There are two angles to the current problem. One is accountability or the lack of it in Indian cricket. There isn’t a single cricket association in India which has a professional set-up in place. These associations get the requisite funds from the BCCI but where does all the money go? And even for the money that is actually being spent on sprucing up the infrastructure, the way it is being spent is a matter of concern. And here the stress is on the quality of spend. No, we aren’t even talking of any wrongdoings.

In simple terms, it is all about project management. These are the days of the turnkey projects in the world. These are the days where flyovers are constructed at speeds that are at least 10 times faster than those about a decade ago. Then, in such a scenario why does a renovation of a cricket stadium miss the deadline? The problem lies in the management of the work-flow process. Professional management is the key to success.
What should be done to change this?

This problem needs to be arrested and that itself will be a process. There are no instant solutions but in the medium to long term, professionalism can embrace the way cricket is run in India. Orissa Cricket Association stunned everyone by appointing Michael Bevan as their Ranji Coach. That is a staggering move and in the right direction.

Every such small step can go a long way in ensuring Kochis, Goas and Kolkatas do not repeat themselves in the future. The need of the hour is for serious introspection as to why such things are repeating themselves in Indian cricket. The need is to accept this as a systemic failure and go about reforming the system itself than merely plugging the holes. Indian cricket cannot live on ‘M-Seals’. There is a need to have a permanent solution and that needs to happen now.

Mahindra Genio was launched today and will be available pan India in February. More data has been shared on this new 1.25 tonne capacity pickup truck that sits on the Xylo platform.

Mahindra Genio

The Mahindra Genio, unlike flat and boxy trucks, has an aerodynamic body, thanks to the development carried out on the Xylo. The clear lens headlamps are useful addition. The exterior finish is metallic, so it will seem somewhat upmarket on the road.

Mahindra Genio

The interiors suffer from the shortage of equipment, but the design is very practical and is in-line with MPVs in our market. The Xylo’s dashboard, devoid of all equipment (AC, music player, driver information system, etc.) is installed on the Genio.

Mahindra Genio

Adjustable power steering and semi-bucket seats will help better driver comfort. Bottle holder and mobile charging point are very useful inclusions. Certain plusses of the Xylo like the large glove compartment and doors remain untouched. The bigger ORVMs will come in handy during the night on the highway.

Mahindra Genio

The Genio can take up to 1250 kgs in its loading area. Hauling this giant is a 2.5-liter CRDI engine that presents 75hp power and 220Nm of torque to the rear wheels. Unlike the Xylo, its maximum speed of the load carrier has been limited to 120kph.

Mahindra Genio

Oil change interval is set to 20,000 km eliminating the need to stop frequently to keep the engine in good health.
